The male is an unmistakable bird: it has a red pompadour with metallic green glitters on its forehead and two side stripes of white or very light cream, in which the dark eyes and the peak of a coral red tone stand out. Resembling a few beards, it has feathers of a coppery orange color. The chest and throat are purple; the belly is white, and the sides are creamy with two bluish bands, which give way to orange stripes curved upwards.

The female is quite similar to that of the joyuyo duck; it has a much more discreet plumage: brown and ocher tones on its upper parts, a ring and a white band around the eye, and paler lower parts, with mottled flanks.
